IM VOIP and Skype

These technologies will allow you to talk to home for free (except for paying for internet cafes) – but require a bit more tech knowhow.

IM – Instant Messaging

Now a very popular way to communicate, IM is easily available to anyone with a internet connection. It doesnt even require you to install any software if you use meebo (www.meebo.com). There are several different networks to choose from, and your choice will probably depend on what your friends use. Jusr remember to teach your parents etc how to use IM before you go! The provider options are:

  • MSN – Microsofts offering, popular and the software should be on every Windows XP PC
  • Yahoo!
  • ICQ
  • Google Talk

VOIP / Skype
Voice Over IP is simply using a pc to make phone calls. These calls can either be to another computer (free) or to a land line (cheap). Skype is simply the most popular of these services – its easy to use and just works. Calls to most landlines world wide cost £0.012 – which is very good. The downside of this technology is that you need both the software and a headset / USB Phone with you, and the knowledge to get it working. Skype can be run from a USB key, simplifying things, and most PC’s will take a headset easily. Most net cafes will have somebody who could help as well. All the above IM software will also do PC to PC phone calls as well, but not to land lines.
